Verse of the Day

LAKE MARY, FL—A significant percentage of pastors aspire to address mental illness in their

sermons but more than half of them rarely or never do. While congregations encourage medical

help to those with physical ailments, the general consensus toward mental illness is often to just

pray, involve oneself in church activities, and study the Bible.

Ob-gyn, minister, and author Dr. Carol Peters-Tanksley, known as Dr. Carol, offers a more detailed

approach in her book Overcoming Fear and Anxiety Through Spiritual Warfare.

Dr. Carol recognizes that mental illness—specifically fear and anxiety—has spiritual, mental, and

physical sides that work together to complete our mental health. In her book she addresses how to

restore optimal mental health by explaining psychological and physiological truths and also

employing spiritual warfare tactics.

“Finding relief from something such as fear and anxiety usually involves all the areas of your life,

and we’ll look at each of those areas individually,” Dr. Carol says. “We’ll talk about how cooperating

with God in all those areas is part of what He desires for you in your journey toward health and

well-being.”

LifeWay Research reported on how Christians who suffer from a mental illness often do not seek

help from their churches or ministry leaders, fearing that their mental health issues would indicate

spiritual weakness or unbelief.

In her book Dr. Carol warns that the enemy uses other people’s words to cause you to experience

fear, anxiety, or other negative emotions.

She provides six strategies to combat these spiritual forces through spiritual warfare. The strategies

involve rethinking destructive thoughts, joining forces with like-minded believers, and speaking

words that have an effect in the spirit realm.

Retired professor and chair of Christian Counseling at Oral Roberts University, Edward E. Decker Jr.,

says Dr. Carol “describes spiritual warfare and the processes involved in overcoming the ‘slings and

arrows’ of life in language that confirms the love of God, the grace of Christ, and the presence of the

Holy Spirit as available to everyone who is in distress. [She] truly believes, as do I, that God does not

desire any of His children to be bound by fear or anxiety.”

Dr. Carol has practiced medicine for more than twenty-five years and is board-certified in

obstetrics-gynecology and reproductive endocrinology. She received her medical degree from Loma

Linda University, where she completed an ob-gyn residency. She also obtained a doctor of ministry

degree from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She makes her home in Austin, Texas,

where she enjoys being Grandma Carol to four wonderful grandchildren. Connect with Dr. Carol at
