‘The Return of the Gods’ hit New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Publishers Weekly bestsellers lists

Cahn points out that these ancient gods could only return by casting out that by which they had themselves been cast out: the Spirit of God.

“As the gods had been driven out of the mainstream culture of the ancient world, they would now seek to drive God and those who followed Him out of the mainstream of modern culture,” Cahn writes. “As the gods had once been driven to the margins and shadows of their culture, they would now seek to drive Christians to the margins, to the shadows, to the closets and catacombs of modern culture.”

How would these ancient beings achieve this goal? “They would seek to gain control of the young,” Cahn writes. “And they would do so through the media, television, the internet, and the classroom. At the same time, the gods would attack the transmission of the Christian faith from parent to child and from teacher to student in Christian schools and universities. As they had once been cut off from influencing the young and cast out by a new generation, the gods would now seek to cut off the young from the Christian faith and to use the new generation to cast out the Christian faith and bring Judeo-Christian civilization to an end.”

But there is hope for those who stand strong in the Lord, according to Cahn. “All who are called by His name can take encouragement, heart, strength, hope, and courage to live unbowed in the face of the gods,” Cahn explains. “It is time to be strong and of good courage. It is time to be bold. It is time to let go

of all fear and concern and to take a stand against the darkness and for the light.

“The darkness will end, but the light will be forever,” he concludes. “And so as it is written, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, for greater, much greater, is He who is in you than he who is in the world.”

In the book, Cahn identifies three key ancient gods who are at work at this very moment — a dark trinity that embody the apostasy itself: the Possessor, the Enchantress, and the Destroyer. These three spirits worked together in a progression of seduction, with the Possessor ushering in the Enchantress, then the Enchantress ushering in the Destroyer.

The Possessor was the first. To the nation of Israel, according to Cahn, he was the embodiment of paganism and of all pagan gods. He was the other god, the substitute god, and he warred against the true God. He was the god that Israel turned to when it turned away from the Almighty God.

But the Possessor was not alone, Cahn warns. He had a wife known as the Enchantress. “In some ancient mythologies of the Middle East, she was the goddess of sexuality and, specifically, of sexual immorality,” says Cahn. “She was a seducer, a temptress, the goddess who captivated, allured, and snatched away. As the patron goddess of the tavern, or alehouse, she was associated with the partaking of alcohol, particularly of beer. She dwelled in the taverns and mixed sexuality with intoxication.”

This sexualization of Israel is exactly what is happening in America today. “When the spirit of the Enchantress came to America, the same dynamics [of old] began to replay,” Cahn writes. “Sexuality was deified. So the gods would alter their appearances and hide their identities.”

The gods could only return, says Cahn, if there was a falling away from the Christian faith and a biblical worldview. He outlines how that has certainly happened in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century.

Cahn uses America’s close ties to Israel as a pattern. “As Israel was consecrated to God from its inception, so was America,” Cahn recounts. “In its founding days, America’s Puritan leader John Winthrop gave the new civilization a charge based on Moses’ charge to the Israelites. If America followed the ways of God, it would become the most blessed, prosperous, and powerful of civilizations. But he also gave a prophetic warning:

‘But if our hearts shall turn away, so that we will not obey, but shall be seduced, and worship and serve other Gods, our pleasure and profits, and serve them… we shall surely perish.’

“America at its inception was given the same warning that Israel was given at its inception,” says Cahn. “It was warned against the seduction of the gods, just as the gods had seduced Israel. And in this is the key: the gods, or spirits, that have returned to America and Western civilization are the same gods and spirits that seduced ancient Israel in the days of its apostasy.”
